Presentation Background

Marin Clean Energy is an effort by the Marin Energy Authority to bring "clean green energy" (e.g., wind, solar) to Marin County residents. MCE will be independent of similar Pacific Gas & Electric services to Marin. Renewable resources will be from sites that may or may not be located here in Marin.

MCE is being promoted by Marin County politicians, but has not been uniformly accepted by all Marin County communities. The Marin County Grand Jury in its recent report, (see: "Pull the Plug" -- 23 pages), has recomended that MCE be halted . The Marin Independent Journal has also cautioned that the County should proceed slowly on this effort. At this point there is no plan for a public vote to approve or disapprove the project, even though there have been many calls for it. The June election's ballot Proposition 16 will address the need to put initiatives such as Marin Clean Energy to a vote. MCE is being rushed into implementation so it will not be able to be first voted on, even if Proposition 16 is passed. MUTA is very concerned about this rushed approval with many questions remaining and without any public vote.

Ms. Anthony will bring us up to date on the realities of bringing "clean green energy" to Marin county. She is also familiar with programs under way elsewhere and how they are working for their constituencies.
